Blues shot-stopper started well but fell to pieces amid late barrage

Chelsea are on the brink of a Champions League last-16 exit after losing 5-2 to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg.

The Blues were level at 2-2 with 25 minutes left to play but PSG were clinical on the break and left the Blues facing a likely exit from the competition from here on a bruising night at the Parc des Princes.

Dom Smith was at the Parc des Princes to rate the Chelsea players’ performances…

Played confidently at first, assured with the ball at his feet and making one fine save. But his distribution came unstuck when Barcola blocked one short pass and Vitinha lobbed him to make it 3-2. And he was at fault for the fifth goal too.

Malo Gusto 7

One of Chelsea’s best performers on the night, scoring their first equaliser and working hard to restrict Barcola and Dembele down the left. Neither PSG goal came down his side.

Was given a special mission to press Dembele intensely. At times it left him out of position and he was too easily rounded by the Frenchman for the second PSG goal.

Trevoh Chalobah 4

The deepest of Chelsea’s defenders. His usual aerial dominance was not on display at the Parc des Princes, where he went in too hard for a challenge he was never likely to make and that contributed to the Dembele goal. Nowhere near to Kvaratskhelia for either of his goals.

Marc Cucurella 5

Won plenty of headers and did a good job on Desire Doue but not efficient on the ball.

Moises Caicedo 5

Had a mixed evening, winning possession plenty but overcommitting for PSG’s second goal as they broke away.

Reece James 6

Very composed in the middle of the park where he again put in a good shift.

Cole Palmer 5

Had a livlier first half than second, drifting in off the right and carrying the ball up the pitch for the Blues. One good chance was saved.

Enzo Fernandez 8

Chelsea’s best player. Assisted their first goal, scored their second, and sprayed intelligent passes about all evening.

Pedro Neto 7

Follows Fernandez with the second-best performance of the night for the visitors. Grabbed an assist for Fernandez and was a constant threat down the left.

Joao Pedro 5

Worked his socks off to try to hold the ball up but didn’t have a huge amount of luck on that score. Finished confidently for 3-3 only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
