With Xabi Alonso appointed as new manager, Chelsea fans are naturally getting excited about the progress we could make next year. They’re not the only ones, it seems. Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness has been talking up the potential impact of the new coach.

What Alonso will bring to Chelsea that Rosenior didn’t

“Whereas Liam Rosenior was probably too compliant. I don’t think Xabi Alonso will be,” Wyness said in quotes picked up by Football Insider.

“Alonso will want to do things, and set his stamp on it from day one. You may see a new invigorated Chelsea and there will be a belief that this is a manager that finally understands them, is a player’s player and will be able to read players much better and get this big collection of talent they’ve got finally sparking.

“There’s hope for Chelsea next season to really be competing at the top end.”

It’s the most optimistic version possible – but he’s saying all the things we’re hoping. If all goes well, we could see a spectacular rebound from how low things have been this season.
