A decade on from Leicester City’s title, Christian Fuchs has completed a whirlwind first step in management by keeping Newport County in the Football League. It capped a full-circle moment he did not always envisage.
Fuchs oversaw 30 games, and a decisive victory at Barrow sealed survival. Late goals from Thomas Davies and Bobby Kamwa did it on 2 May. "Exactly 10 years later we got this success with Newport to stay in the league," he said, speaking to LeicestershireLive.
Signed in summer 2015, the then 29-year-old joined on a free from Schalke and went on to win the Premier League, reach the Champions League quarter-finals, finish fifth twice and lift the FA Cup.
In 2021 he moved to the United States with Charlotte FC and retired two years later, then became assistant manager.
He returned late last year to take over at Newport after David Hughes was dismissed with the side bottom of League Two. "We see Christian as the sort of man to lead our club forward," said chairman Huw Jenkins.
Reflecting on coaching, Fuchs said: "I never wanted to be [a coach]."
His squad featured Leicester loanees Sammy Braybrooke and Nathan Opoku, though Braybrooke returned before joining Chesterfield. "[They are] really good characters and really good players," Fuchs said.
He was back at the King Power at the weekend for the 10-year title celebration and scored the final penalty for the Leicester City Legends as the "FUUUUCHS" roar rang round the ground.
