Roberto Gualtieri opened the European Football Clubs’ general assembly at the Cavalieri Waldorf Hotel in Rome. The mayor of the Italian capital thanked all the clubs that are part of the independent body for choosing to hold this historic event in the city.

He told reporters: “The goal is to put the clubs at the centre of football, and this aligns with the clubs’ needs,” He said. “We are delighted that the official launch of this new phase is taking place here; Rome has always been a symbol of dialogue and exchange. Your choice, coinciding with the Jubilee, fills us with pride. Rome is a capital with a glorious past that is open to international sporting and cultural events.”

Gualtieri also thanked Roma president Dan Friedkin and Lazio president Claudio Lotito for their presence and journey together in the city: “I would especially like to thank Dan Friedkin for accompanying you all on this journey. I also extend my greetings to Lazio president Claudio Lotito. Rome is a city of sport and football, not only for the millions of fans who follow the matches but also for the many citizens who actively participate in the sport every day. We are providing a series of activities to get as many people as possible involved in sport.”

Concluding his comments, Gualtieri took stock of the situation at Roma’s stadium and it has been a hot topic of discussion this week.

“We’re working to organise some matches for the 2032 European Championship, and we’ll continue to grow. We’re in the final stages of the Roma stadium project; it will be one of the most beautiful in the world.”

Speaking further, he hailed the upcoming project, which will give Roma an added revenue chain and play a role in improving Serie A.

“It won’t just be an extraordinary sports facility, but it will bring regeneration to an entire neighbourhood by also creating open sports spaces. Rome is a city that opens up to the world, and I hope this match can mark the beginning of a new season for European football.”

There has been an increasing trend in Serie A clubs now opting for their own stadiums. Fiorentina are having their own stadium built and Milan and Inter are involved in a tussle which could lead to the construction of their new stadium.

This will benefit Serie A, as clubs will have a renewed revenue chain and will mirror how clubs operate in the Premier League.
