Manchester City will face off against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu for the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie on Wednesday night.
Pep Guardiola’s side enter their upcoming European battle in the backdrop of a commanding 3-1 comeback over Newcastle United in the FA Cup fifth round, with Omar Marmoush’s match-winning brace underscoring the attacking depth now at Guardiola’s disposal.
City remain in contention for an unprecedented quadruple and the draw against Real Madrid could not have come at a more intriguing juncture – as the Blues enter a potentially season-defining fortnight of games across several fronts.
The fitness picture heading into Wednesday’s game makes for fascinating reading on both sides. Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham are not expected to feature in the first leg, with Bellingham continuing his recovery from a hamstring injury and Mbappe managing a knee sprain that has troubled him since December.
Will Erling Haaland miss Real Madrid clash after Manchester City training injury scare?
That is a seismic blow for Alvaro Arbeloa’s side, who are already navigating an availability crisis, further compounded by a long-term ACL injury to Rodrygo.
City’s own preparations have not been without concern. Erling Haaland shared a social media post hinting at a training ground knock after a challenge from Mateo Kovacic, raising doubts over the Norwegian’s availability at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Guardiola is expected to provide a fitness update on his squad when he speaks to the press in Madrid on Tuesday. Should Haaland be ruled out, Marmoush – electric against Newcastle – represents the most compelling alternative to partner Antoine Semenyo in attack.
City did visit the Santiago Bernabeu earlier this season in the Champions League group-stage and returned with a positive result, a confidence-booster that will not be lost on the squad.
Here is how the City Xtra writing team see the first leg playing out:
Freddie Pye: Having seen his performance levels sporadically this season, but perhaps most notably at the Bernabeu during the league phase meeting between these two sides, it simply has to be Jeremy Doku on the left of a traditional front-three, for me.
The Belgian has an outstanding ability to retain possession of the ball, whilst also offering the drive needed in the final third to beat his opposing defender with ease, and possibly find the free man in the penalty area or around the goal.
Vayam Lahoti: Omar Marmoush just edges it ahead of Doku for me, purely down to the significantly greater goal-threat offered by the in-form Egypt international, who has really impressed since January and would take great confidence from his match-winning brace at St. James’ Park at the weekend.
Haaland will be marked heavily at the Bernabeu and opportunities to score will be few and far between for the Norwegian, who can attract opposition defenders and make room for others in attack. And when those chances come, Guardiola will benefit by fielding Marmoush in his starting XI.
“Amazing performance” – Omar Marmoush gives Pep Guardiola major Real Madrid headache after match-winning brace
Freddie Pye: In Ruben Dias and Marc Guehi, complimented by Matheus Nunes at right-back and Rayan Ait-Nouri at left-back, Manchester City may have found the secret recipe in defence for success this season.
Three of those names have been consistent over the last few weeks, while the introduction of Ait-Nouri has enabled Nico O’Reilly to flourish further forward and offer the much-needed physicality in the centre of the pitch.
Vayam Lahoti: I’m not as convinced, I must say. Madrid are missing a series of key names in attack but regardless of who plays, they just seem to come alive in the Champions League and there remain frailties in City’s backline that can be exploited.
Nunes is enjoying his best season at the Etihad Stadium and is finally getting his flowers after an indifferent 2024-25 season. Ait-Nouri has been very impressive going forward since his return from AFCON but defending isn’t his strong suit either. Dias and Guehi will need to have a near-perfect 180 minutes if City are to keep Madrid at bay over the course of two legs.
Freddie Pye: For me, it has to be Antoine Semenyo. The Ghanaian’s goal-threat has been central to Manchester City remaining in the Premier League title race in recent weeks, and progressing in the FA Cup.
Making his debut appearance in Europe’s premier club competition, Semenyo will surely be keen to make his mark on the very summit of the game, and where better to show that hunger than one of the globe’s most iconic venues.
Vayam Lahoti: Nico O’Reilly is the glue that’s held Manchester City’s midfield together this year as Rodri goes through the motions after an injury-ravaged 18 months. With club captain Bernardo Silva doing the running and chasing, O’Reilly has been instrumental going forward for the Blues.
With the 21-year-old returning to the lineup against Newcastle on Saturday night, Guardiola can lean on Manchester City’s match-winner against Real Madrid earlier in the season to build on his recent run of excellent form in midfield on the biggest European stage once more.
Real Madrid vs Manchester City (Champions League Last-16): Match Preview, Team News, Head to Head, How to Watch
Freddie Pye: You would think so. This is a Manchester City side firmly finding its stride, and taking on a Real Madrid side struggling in the way of key players and fitness, you’d expect Pep Guardiola to get that message across.
City may not have many better opportunities to take a real statement result from the Bernabeu than this week, and there is a clear chance to have this tie in a very good position by the time the two meet again at the Etihad Stadium in a week’s time.
Vayam Lahoti: I’m not confident when I write this but I also think City will have just enough to see Madrid off. Prior to a gut-wrenching draw against Nottingham Forest last week, Guardiola’s side have enjoyed a purple patch of late and most importantly, the backline has looked the part after a poor run of form in January.
Bar Semenyo, there are not enough goals in the side should Haaland be marked out by Antonio Rudiger – unless Marmoush can carry his form from Tyneside to the Spanish capital? Tijjani Reijnders and Phil Foden can come off the bench to make an impact but City’s defence will decide this tie in my opinion, because there are just not enough match-winners in attack.
