David McGoldrick and Notts County have been unable to come to an agreement on a contract extension.

The club confirmed on their official website that the forward has not re-signed for another campaign with the League Two side.

The 37-year-old spent the last two years with the Magpies, featuring 72 times across two league campaigns, contributing 29 goals and six assists.

However, a sixth place finish in the table this campaign did not result in promotion, with McGoldrick now set to leave Meadow Lane.

David McGoldrick’s disappointing Notts County exit

When asked about McGoldrick’s departure, FLW’s Notts County fan pundit Gareth Parr claimed it’s a disappointing development for the club.

He believes the striker has made a huge impact, particularly off the pitch, and that losing someone of his influence in the dressing room will be a blow.

“Definitely disappointing, he’s been a great asset to the club,” Parr told Football League World.

“Probably more so off the pitch than probably on.

“I guess when he came back he was never expected to play as much as he did, and be used more as an impact player, but the raft of injuries the club have had over the last two years have probably meant he’s played a lot more minutes than anybody would’ve expected.

“As a 37-year-old, he’s still someone that’s incredible and has shown up and been a great role model for some of the younger loanees, especially George Abbott, so I think off the pitch more than on it he’ll be really missed.

“Although he’s still got it and can make a difference as an impact player.

McGoldrick’s next steps predicted

Parr believes that MK Dons could be a suitable next step for the former Ireland international, although he also suggested a move into coaching could be on the cards.

“As to where he’ll end up, I honestly don’t know,” he added.

“There’s lots of talk of him re-joining his old club mates at MK Dons, obviously [Dan] Crowley and [Aaron] Nemane are there, they were former Notts players, plus his old manager from Derby [Paul Warne].

“But, to be honest, I don’t know.

“I could personally see him maybe taking some time out and look at getting involved in football in some other way, maybe as a coach.”

McGoldrick departure will hurt Notts County

McGoldrick has shown in the last two years that he is still more than capable of competing at a League Two level at this stage of his career.

He was the team’s second best goal scorer in League Two last season, with only Alassana Jatta finding the back of the net more than his 17 times.

Given how close the side came to promotion last season, it will now be a key part of their summer business to find someone to replace those goals.

Being unable to convince McGoldrick to stay another year could prove a real blow for Notts County in the next campaign.
