FLW's Blades fan pundit has assessed Jack Robinson's start to his Birmingham City career
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Jack Robinson's first month at Birmingham City has been a rollercoaster to say the least.
The 32-year-old won the Man of the Match award on his debut in a 1-0 win against Swansea City, but since then, he's been sent off twice in four games, both in defeats against Coventry City and Hull City.
The centre-back has been on the fringes between the Championship and the Premier League for the majority of his career, especially at his previous club, Sheffield United. There, he made the play-offs twice and was promoted with the Blades in the 2022/23 campaign.
However, his contributions to the side divided opinion at Bramall Lane. Jimmy, the host of the Blades Ramble and FLW's Sheffield United fan pundit, believes that he was a good Championship-level defender, and feels that his side has gotten better since he made the move to St Andrew's.
Robinson was always a solid defender in the second tier at Bramall Lane, but then equally was also part of the worst defence in Premier League history in the 2023/24 campaign.
Lots of Sheffield United fans look back on their former captain's time at the club positively, but Jimmy felt that his side could have replaced him with better players sooner, and that their defence is better since he departed.
"I think Jack Robinson is a decent Championship defender, and I've felt that for a long time," he said.
"Some of the fanbase didn't agree with my take on him; they thought I was very down on him when he was at Sheffield United, and that's probably fair. I think when you get a view of a player, it's hard to shake it.
"But I think he's a decent Championship defender. When we were bouncing between there and the Premier League, I thought we needed better, and I think he's now found his level."
Despite Birmingham's start to the season being better than Sheffield United's, Jimmy felt that the Blades' defence was there to be improved, and has improved this summer.
Japhet Tanganga, Mark McGuinness and Ben Mee have all started the Blades' last four games, of which they have conceded just three goals and kept two clean sheets.
"Robinson got man of the match in his first game, so we can't discount his ability at this level, but he's also been sent off twice now and scored an own goal in his first four games at the club, and you'll get that with him," Jimmy explained.
"This level is where he should be, and it was certainly the right decision to move him on. We've now got a stronger defence without him in the starting eleven."
Robinson is now unavailable for the next four games following his red card against Hull, and these two and a half weeks will be difficult, as the 32-year-old watches on from the sidelines.
However, this means that the former Blade will need to hit the ground running upon his return and prove to the Birmingham fans who have been frustrated with him recently that he is good enough to play in a side with promotion ambitions.
It isn't until December 20th that Robinson gets to return to Bramall Lane, and he'll be hoping by then that both his and the Blues' poor form will have turned around to the point where he can go into the game ready to prove that he is indeed good enough to have remained a starter at his former club.
Birmingham fans will be hoping for that too. But for now, it's all about hoping that they can get through these four games without the 32-year-old, and that his return against Middlesbrough will see more performances akin to the Swansea game, rather than what he has exhibited since.
