The Spaniard has moved on from his sacking at Sheffield United last month by taking over Segunda Division side Real Zaragoza.

Selles took over the Blades in the summer following their play-off final loss to Sunderland, but he lasted just five league games in charge before being dismissed.

He oversaw defeats in all five games, which left the Yorkshire outfit bottom of the Championship table, with Chris Wilder returning to take over the side for a third time.

This will be Selles’ first time working as a manager in Spain, having previously been head coach at four different clubs in England as his first foray into the role.

Selles has compared the current issues at Real Zaragoza to his time at each of Southampton, Reading and Hull, with the team bottom of the second division table in Spain.

He has highlighted the importance of staying calm and showing character when discussing how to turn their form around, having kept both the Royals and the Tigers up when they were facing relegation from League One and the Championship.

“In the last three years, especially at clubs like Southampton, Reading, and Hull City, we’ve experienced situations similar to the one we’re currently experiencing at Real Zaragoza,” said Selles, via El Desmarque.

“And always with the ambition, in those slightly tougher moments, to be able to show that character.

“That know-how, staying calm, and, above all, trying to take it game by game.

“Day by day, improving our feelings.

“It’s an environment where, for various reasons, we’ve felt comfortable.”

Sheffield United’s form since Ruben Selles’ sacking

Wilder was the one replaced in the summer when Selles was appointed, but Sheffield United agreed to bring him back after their poor start to this season.

Since his return, the 58-year-old has overseen two wins from five games, as well as three defeats.

The Blades are no longer bottom of the table, with their 1-0 win over Watford last weekend bringing them above rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

Next up for Sheffield United is a trip to face 22nd place Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday evening in a 7.45pm kick-off.

Ruben Selles needs Real Zaragoza stint to recover his reputation

Selles worked across the top three divisions in English football, enjoying various degrees of form at the four clubs he managed.

But the manner of his exit at Sheffield United damaged his reputation, and he now needs this stint in Spain to go well if he is to maintain this as a career.

His time at Reading was impressive, and he successfully prevented Hull from relegation last season, but the step up to Sheffield United was a bridge too far.

It’s obvious he’s taking on a big challenge at Zaragoza given their league position, and if he can keep them up then that will be a great response to his disappointing time at Bramall Lane.
