Clubless since 1 July after a largely inactive season with Sevilla, Orjan Nyland seized his moment as Norway beat Brazil 2-1 in the World Cup last 16. According to L'Équipe, that display could speed up his hunt for a new club.
He produced a string of saves and kept out Bruno Guimaraes from the spot on Sunday. He later called it the biggest match of his life and first thanked his wife Tine and their three children for their support.
The 35-year-old had lost Sevilla’s number one shirt to Odysseas Vlachodimos and, despite being Norway’s first choice since 2021, entered the tournament short of rhythm. He sought a January move without success, then played on the final day, a 0-1 defeat at Celta Vigo on 23 May after an error.
Now out of contract, agent Jim Solbakken said he has fielded many calls from clubs in the five major European leagues, plus Saudi Arabia and Los Angeles, and added that Nyland has not disappointed for Norway.
His international consistency dates back to being named best goalkeeper at the 2013 European Under-21 Championship, in contrast to an erratic club career. English spells from 2018 to 2022 at Aston Villa, Norwich, Bournemouth and Reading left limited impressions, with Christophe Lollichon calling him average.
Recruiter John Vik put it down to some ill-fated choices and a role shaped by the coach. Erik Thorstvedt credited Stale Solbakken for a tight squad and noted Norway’s keepers also excelled at the 1994 and 1998 World Cups despite club setbacks.
