For the first time since their treble-winning 2019/20 campaign, Bayern Munich booked their place in the DFB Pokal quarter-finals for only the second time.

Germany’s record champions were made to work for their win despite racing into a 2-0 lead against Union Berlin after 24 minutes. Leopold Querfeld halved Bayern’s deficit from the spot after Jonathan Tah was judged to have handled the ball.

Diego Leite’s own goal then restored Bayern’s two-goal cushion before the break, but Querfeld stepped up to score his second of the evening after Harry Kane’s foul on Leite inside the box. Querfeld became the first player to score two penalties against Manuel Neuer in the goalkeeper’s 906th professional match for club and country.

After securing Bayern’s place in the quarter-finals, Kane reacted to a tough victory.

“This win means a lot,” said Bayern’s leading goalscorer. “This hasn’t been a good competition for us in recent years. It’s games like this you need to win.

“Coming through games like this gives you extra confidence.”

Reacting to Union’s second penalty, Kane said: “When you have a game with 100 aerial duels, I don’t understand the penalty decision.

“It was harsh. Both penalty decisions were harsh, to be honest.

“The most important thing is winning and staying in the competition.”
