The history of Celtic Football Club is thankfully full of triumphs, but it is also not short of heartbreaking tragedy. In the 1930s, there were various Celtic line-ups who almost captured the club’s story in microcosm. In this decade there were wonderful trophy wins, but there was also heartbreak of the worst kind.

In-depth storytelling

This era in Celtic’s history deserves to be given in-depth storytelling, and Matt Corr has done this quite wonderfully with his latest books. Matt’s writing of this part of the Celtic story not only details the football games and classic wins going on throughout the 1930s decade but provides an emotional telling of some of the saddest episodes in the club’s history.

We might not have a lot of actual footage of the 1930s Celtic teams, but thankfully we have storytellers like Matt who can bring their stories to life for us to read about and enjoy, again and again.

Walfrid and The Bould Bhoys and The Celtic Rising

Two of our biggest-selling books to-date are the late David Potter’s wonderful account of Celtic in 1965, titled The Celtic Rising and Walfrid and The Bould Bhoys by Liam Kelly, David Potter and Matt Corr. Both books are completely sold out but are available on Kindle (click on green text above to order), as indeed will be the two volumes of Celtic in the Thirties.

Talking of David Potter, a few years ago, when Matt Corr decided to write the authoritative history of Celtic in the 1930s, David, off his own back, worked on a number or articles on the great Celtic players of that decade and submitted them to both The Celtic Star and also to Matt to assist with his research. It was a typically generous thing for David to do. These articles have never been published before, as we set them aside for the launch period for Celtic in the Thirties, which initially was scheduled for last October.

David Potter’s Celtic in the Eighties – coming in 2025

Sadly David passed away in July 2023 before Matt’s book was complete. However through those wonderful and unpublished articles, he is still ‘doing his bit’ to help his fellow Celtic author, Celtic Star colleague and friend in promoting his new books by giving his own take on the Celtic players of that iconic decade in the Celtic story.

Celtic in the Thirties – Volume One

Celtic in the Thirties – Volume Two

We’ll start publishing David Potter’s articles on the Celtic stars of the 1930s later today.

One other thing to mention on this is that what turned out to be David Potter’s final Celtic book has yet to be published. When myself and the two authors agreed that Matt would write a book on the 1930s we agreed at the same time that David would write about Celtic in the 1980s.

So David Potter’s final book is his take on Celtic in the Eighties and Celtic Star Books will publish this in 2025, with the permission of David’s widow Rosemary already given. Matt will ‘return the favour’ by committing his time to editing the book, which as always will be entertaining and educational on all things Celtic for the period and the people David enjoyed writing about.
