Conmebol has suspended Renato Gaúcho for three Copa Sudamericana matches following a disciplinary process.
As reported by Globo.com, the case stemmed from his decision not to travel to Buenos Aires for Vasco’s group opener against Barracas Central. Conmebol opened proceedings immediately after the match in Argentina to assess his conduct.
Vasco submitted a written defence last Wednesday seeking to avoid sanctions. On that occasion, Renato stayed in Rio with most first-team regulars to avoid losing two days of training. Assistant Marcelo Salles took charge and the game finished 0-0 at the Estadio Florencio Sola.
In the team’s second Sudamericana outing, he mocked Conmebol after a 2-1 home defeat to Chile’s Audax Italiano at São Januário, a match marked by refereeing controversy. Those comments were also considered in the punishment.
The sanction was based on article 11 of Conmebol’s Disciplinary Code, which addresses principles of conduct. Paragraph 2 cites offences including falling below minimum standards of acceptable behaviour in organised football, insulting the confederation or its officials, and conduct that could discredit football and Conmebol.
