Corinthians boss on Garro options, Majestoso and injury returns

Corinthians ended up being defeated by Ceará 1-0 on Sunday afternoon (9), in a match held at Neo Química Arena, for the 33rd round of the Brazilian Championship. With this result, the club from Parque São Jorge dropped to 13th place in the national tournament with 42 points (11 wins, nine draws, and 13 losses – 35 goals scored and 38 conceded).

In a press conference, coach Dorival Júnior was asked about the third yellow card received by midfielder Rodrigo Garro, already in the final stretch of the match against the team from Ceará. The number 8 will be out for the match on the 20th, Thursday, at 7:30 pm (Brasília time), against São Paulo, in Itaquera, for the 34th round of the Brasileirão.

“It's a natural situation in the game; there’s no other way to look at it. Of course, we’ll say he should have been a bit more patient with the moment, with the situation, but it’s the heat of the match. You can’t punish a player for something like this. If it were a different, provocative situation, then yes; but not in this case,” he began.

He was later asked about a replacement for the Argentine in the Majestoso. In his absence, Breno Bidon had been playing as the number 10, opening up space for another midfielder to join the starting lineup. Midfielder Dieguinho, who stood out against Ceará playing wide on the right side of the diamond, emerges as an alternative.

“We have to find a player who can fulfill the role, especially since we have a very strong play that helps us unlock many games and we have to take advantage of it. If not, we will certainly have another player who can develop and execute this very important function,” he continued.

Next, he looked ahead to the Majestoso derby against São Paulo at home, which is considered a ‘six-point’ game, given that the rival has 45 points in the standings, just three more than Alvinegro.

“We are going to prepare for the next match. Up until now, our work has been focused on getting the best result against Ceará. It was no different. From now on, we start thinking about the São Paulo team, reworking the week and trying to find the best possible balance so that we have a good game, in terms of productivity, very different from what we saw.”

Dorival Júnior also responded about the non-call-up of midfielders José Martínez and André Carrillo for Venezuela and Peru, respectively, for the last FIFA break of the year. The coach emphasized that Corinthians does not interfere in this matter at all.

“We have no interference whatsoever in call-ups, we always respect all of them and it would be no different if there was such a possibility at any time. We believe that no club would make such a decision, unless it was a very delicate situation with no other possible solution,” he explained.

Finally, Dorival answered about the return of Corinthians’ injured players after the end of the FIFA break. Currently, goalkeeper Hugo Souza is recovering from a muscle injury in his left thigh, midfielders Raniele and André are in the process of recovering from a muscle injury and physical transition after a ligament injury in the right ankle, respectively. Midfielder Vitinho, meanwhile, is in the final stages of recovery from surgery on his right knee.

“I believe they will all be in better condition right after the FIFA break. Vitinho is already starting to work with the ball, he has been, he has made great progress compared to the last injury. I hope he’ll be in full condition already, maybe for the next match or the one after, but he’s already well advanced in the process. André is in a different situation, probably for the following game he’ll be ready, and Hugo, I believe we’ll also have him back soon”, he concluded.
