Corinthians have formally ended José Martínez’s deal, with the termination registered on Tuesday in the CBF’s BID.
According to Meu Timao, the agreement leaves Corinthians paying 30% of the midfielder’s wages from February to December this year, excluding January, and covering surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Despite a contract running to December 2027, there will be no financial obligation for 2027.
The board had been seeking ways to cut ties after the Venezuelan reported back over a month late because of passport renewal issues. On his return to CT Joaquim Grava he was already injured, which could rule him out of the 2026 season.
During the close season, images showed him taking part in a festive match in Venezuela wearing a support on his left knee, and in other footage he appeared to be limping. The delay and those scenes caused discomfort for head coach Dorival Júnior and the board.
Martínez arrived at Parque São Jorge in August 2024 from Philadelphia Union for two million dollars, roughly R$ 10.9 million at the time. FIFA later punished Corinthians for a delay in the transfer payment. He made 70 appearances, scored two goals and provided two assists, and was part of the squads that won the 2025 Paulistão and Copa do Brasil.
