José Martínez, the Venezuelan former Corinthians midfielder, has undergone surgery in São Paulo to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, and is expected to be out for eight to 10 months.
According to Globo.com, his agency shared photos from the hospital shortly after the operation.
His representatives said the procedure was successful and carried out as planned, adding that rehabilitation now begins with support from family and medical staff, and stressing his commitment, determination and strong mentality.
The left-knee ACL injury led to his contract being terminated, after he suffered the injury while on holiday and did not inform the club’s medical department.
When he reported back more than a month late, citing issues obtaining a new passport, Martínez complained of pain in the same knee. Medical tests days later confirmed the ligament rupture.
To avoid a legal dispute, Corinthians reached an agreement to rescind his deal, covering the cost of the São Paulo surgery and agreeing to pay 30% of his salary until the end of this year.
