Corinthians keeper slams refereeing after RB Bragantino clash

Corinthians ended up being defeated by Red Bull Bragantino 2-1 on Wednesday night (5th), at the Cícero de Souza Marques Stadium, in a match valid for the 32nd round of the Brazilian Championship. Striker Yuri Alberto scored Corinthians' goal in the second half.

Despite the defeat, the refereeing by Edna Alves Batista was heavily questioned by the Corinthians side, who have frequently been facing problems with these issues in their matches in the national tournament. Goalkeeper Hugo Souza, who missed the match due to a muscle problem, criticized the way the match was conducted on his social media: “What Edna did today is unacceptable, it’s on her, absurd.”

The first incident happened at the 44th minute of the first half, when, after a VAR review, Edna awarded a penalty by left-back Fabrizio Angileri on defender Alix Vinícius after a dispute between the two players inside the box. Towards the end of the second half, in a similar play, defender Gustavo Henrique was grabbed, but the penalty was not given, which caused outrage among the Alvinegro for lack of consistency.

There were two other episodes: José Martínez was booked near the 30th minute of the first half after fouling midfielder Jhon Jhon. In the second half, the Venezuelan got involved in a shoving match with defender Gustavo Marques inside the box before an RB Bragantino corner kick and ended up being sent off by Edna Alves Batista at the 14th minute of the second half.

Finally, midfielder Charles, who was already on a yellow card for the match against Massa Bruta, received a yellow card after a scuffle with Jhon Jhon and Vanderlan from the opposing team at 50 minutes into the second half. Shortly after, Edna changed her decision and opted to send off the Corinthians player.

After losing to Red Bull Bragantino away in the Brasileirão, Corinthians remains focused on the national competition. The Alvinegro will face Ceará next Sunday (9th), at Neo Química Arena, in a match valid for the 33rd round of the Brazilian Championship.
