Coventry City must target Ipswich Town's centre back Luke Woolfenden before the transfer window deadline

Coventry City have made an impressive start to their Championship campaign, currently sitting comfortably in the play-off places with eight points from their opening four fixtures.

The Sky Blues have raised eyebrows early on in the season for their attacking prowess, finding the back of the net at ease, having found the net 14 times so far.

The attacking concoction of Haji Wright leading the line with Jack Rudoni, Ephron Mason-Clark, and Brandon Thomas-Asante in behind, has given Frank Lampard's side much to get excited about in the final third.

However, despite goals flying in, Coventry have also shown that they are there to be had defensively.

The Sky Blues defence has looked somewhat frail so far this campaign as they conceded three goals away to Derby County in gameweek too, as well as another two against Oxford United on Saturday afternoon.

With time running out to bring in defensive reinforcements, Lampard has stressed the importance of bringing in another centre-back before the window's closure tomorrow evening - and the answer could well be at Portman Road.

Lampard has made it clear via the Coventry Telegraph that his intentions prior to the transfer deadline is to bring in a new centre-back as well as a winger.

As for the centre-back position, the Sky Blues have been very active in search of a steely warrior in their back-line, and have been looking in the direction of Hull City's Charlie Hughes.

The 21-year-old has been subject to plenty of transfer speculation this summer and Coventry have had three bids rejected by the Tigers.

With the transfer of Hughes looking like an impossible egg to crack as Hull City have fought hard to keep their prized possession, Coventry must now look for other options. One of these options is Ipswich Town's Luke Woolfenden who has been on the Sky Blues list of targets for some time now.

Woolfenden, who has been a key part of the Tractor Boys' lineup for the past six seasons, has reportedly indicated that he wants to leave the club.

A stalwart for the Suffolk outfit during their League One days, Woolfenden was also a regular starter when Ipswich won promotion to the Premier League, appearing 44 times in the Championship in 2023-24 under Kieran McKenna, but he lost his spot in the starting 11 to Dara O'Shea and Jacob Greaves last season in the top flight.

Slipping further down the pecking order thanks to the summer addition of Cedric Kipre, Woolfenden wants to leave Portman Road, and he may get his wish before the end of the transfer window.

The 26-year-old has merely made one appearance this season, which came in the EFL Cup, and having been left out of Kieran McKenna's side for their latest clash against Derby County, his departure looks imminent.

Ipswich Town had already rejected a bid from the Sky Blues two weeks ago, but with merely a day remaining to complete any business, Coventry must make Woolfenden their prime target now due to the fact that Charlie Hughes is getting too expensive to pursue any further.

The vastly experienced centre-back would add much-needed stability to the Coventry defence, and the potential of forming a solid partnership with the highly-rated Bobby Thomas is a prospect that could excite all involved at the CBS Arena.

Coventry's attack looks to be in good shape as the season kicks into full flow, but with Lampard's defence in need of a slight tweak, Woolfenden could well be the signing to sure up the back four.

With Woolfenden in search of a fresh start as he enters the prime years of his career, his signature could be the difference for the Sky Blues this season as they search for promotion to the Premier League.
