Sheffield Wednesday’s financial turmoil has reached a new low, with the Championship club set to be served with a winding-up petition by HMRC over an unpaid £1 million tax bill, BBC Sport has revelaed.

The looming legal action marks a significant escalation in the Owls’ ongoing crisis and is expected to intensify pressure on owner Dejphon Chansiri to sell the club. The Thai businessman, who has not attended a match this season, has faced growing unrest from supporters amid months of financial instability and off-field chaos.

Wednesday are already under five separate EFL embargoes after failing to pay player wages on time in five of the past seven months. The uncertainty has crippled the club’s operations, prompting manager Danny Rohl’s resignation in July and leaving his assistant, Henrik Pedersen, to lead a depleted squad that failed to play a single pre-season fixture in front of fans.

On the pitch, the situation mirrors the boardroom turmoil: the club sit second from bottom of the Championship, with just six points from nine games. Off it, fan anger has intensified, including boycotts of home EFL Cup ties against Leeds and Grimsby, and protests targeting Chans.
