Six Sheffield Wednesday players have handed in their notice due to the club’s persistent failure to pay wages on time, according to the Telegraph.
They have already been handed a three-window transfer embargo by the English Football League (EFL) over late payments between July last year and this June.
Wednesday were scheduled to pay June’s wages on Monday, but owner Dejphon Chansiri opted to pay only the under-21 players and a portion of staff salaries.
Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) CEO Maheta Molango described the current situation at the club as ‘shocking’ and ‘not tolerable’.
The EFL is unlikely to step in and pay the wages as the Owls still owe several other clubs for transfer payments and contingencies.
For example, Southampton haven’t received full payment for Shea Charles’ loan last season.
Norwich City are also owed money for Akin Famewo, who joined the club in the summer of 2022.
Manager Danny Rohl is also set to leave Wednesday. He is closing in on an agreement on a severance package.
Rohl has held talks with his coaching staff and informed the club that he will be leaving.
His assistant Henrik Pedersen could replace the 36-year-old, provided he receives certain assurances.
