Renato Gaúcho has begun his Vasco tenure tasked with lifting the club out of the relegation zone, and early sessions point to changes. The Brasileiro resumes on Thursday, when Palmeiras visit São Januário in the fifth round.
According to Globo.com, he has trialled a three-man midfield this week to bolster the defence and midfield pressing. Vasco have conceded 12 goals in 13 matches in 2026.
One selection call sits at centre-back, with Saldivia and Cuesta alternating alongside Robert Renan in training. The starting spot remains open.
Saldivia played the last two matches because Cuesta was not fully fit due to pain in his right knee. Now recovered, the Colombian is training normally and in contention to return.
Renato has put the squad through near-daily physical tests. On the grass he is talkative, offering positioning pointers, particularly to the attacking unit.
Inside the camp, early feedback on the 63-year-old’s work has been positive. The dressing room has taken to his methods.
