Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has reportedly held a meeting with players and staff to clear the air after a summer of uncertainty.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl is believed to have held a meeting with playing and coaching staff to “clear the air” after a summer of uncertainty regarding his Owls future.
The German coach was believed to be making an exit from Yorkshire this summer after two seasons at the club, which resulted in Rohl helping them survive in the Championship and then securing a 12th-placed finish last term.
Rohl had previously admitted back at the start of June in an interview with the German newspaper Bild that he wanted a return to the Bundesliga “as quick as possible”.
Throughout the summer, Rohl was linked with jobs at RB Leipzig, Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen, as well as the Leicester City, Middlesbrough and Southampton vacancies, but none of those have led to a move, leaving the ex-Bayern Munich coach without an exit route from South Yorkshire.
And in a dramatic turn of events, the 36-year-old has returned to Wednesday to lead preparations for the upcoming 2025-26 term, which has caused a split in opinion among the fanbase.
Now, Rohl is aiming to carry on as normal, looking to bring about unity again between the players and staff, so the club can look forward to next season, regardless of the financial issues off the pitch.
As reported by The Star, Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl held “clear the air” talks on his return to Middlewood Road.
There had been previous reports of unrest within the playing squad due to Rohl’s return, but he has sought to undo this so that everyone moves forward on the right page.
The meeting is believed to have been undertaken between players, staff and one observing senior club figure, and while the finer details of what was discussed are not immediately clear, it’s understood that a frank exchange of views was aired.
The Owls had recently undergone a training programme at St George’s Park under assistant coach Henrik Pedersen, in which they played out a behind-closed-doors run-out against a Manchester City under-23s side. Wednesday are expected to welcome Mansfield Town for a behind-closed-doors game at Hillsborough on July 26, although no other friendlies have been arranged as of yet.
Danny Rohl is making a smart decision to hold a frank meeting with the coaching and playing staff about the way the summer unfolded.
Ultimately, Rohl looks silly for not earning a move away from Hillsborough after telling media outlets how keen he was to do so, but he’s now facing the music, which will at least earn respect from others inside the building.
With Rohl owning up to his mistakes, the team can try and move forward together, with just four weeks left remaining until the start of the new season.
In light of all the uncertainty off the pitch, the club has to be united and committed on it to fight their way through this taxing period and survive in the Championship.
Whether Owls fans like it or not, the club has the best chance of being successful in the hands of a talented coach like Rohl, so it’s best for everyone to put what happened this summer to the back of their minds and support the team so they can thrive as much as possible.
