Darwin Núñez could leave Saudi Arabia after just one season, with Atlanta United in talks to sign the Al-Hilal striker, according to The Athletic.

Talks are at an early stage and there is no advanced agreement, but Atlanta are seriously exploring a deal for the Uruguay striker. In England, the prospect has been described as a bizarre transfer.

Atlanta United’s record signing Emmanuel Latte Lath is close to departing, creating a designated player slot, and he was left out of Wednesday’s matchday squad as a precaution.

Núñez joined Al-Hilal only last year, yet appears on his way again after losing his place following Karim Benzema’s arrival. He produced six goals and four assists in 16 competitive matches last season. During last summer’s World Cup he also made his first official minutes since February for Uruguay, which ended in disappointment.

Whether Atlanta can prise Núñez from Al-Hilal should become clear in the coming weeks. The American club have the financial muscle to attempt the move, but there is still no final agreement. His fee is unclear, with Transfermarkt valuing him at €20 million, and his contract runs until mid 2028.
