Liverpool’s summer acquisition of Giorgi Mamardashvili is no panicked reaction, no plug to fill a leaking hole. It is, according to former Reds stopper David James, a statement of intent. The Georgia international arrives not to understudy, but to compete — a direct challenger to Alisson Becker, the club’s established and often peerless No.1.
“You have to understand Liverpool haven’t looked at Mamardashvili and thought ‘We need to fill a gap here’,” James explained, speaking at a Carlsberg event. “Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in the world and it’s not often you get asked twice. Mamardashvili has come in as a direct challenger.”
Alisson remains one of the finest goalkeepers in world football — a player who marries elite reflexes with calm authority and rare distribution. To dislodge him is an unenviable task. But Mamardashvili, at 23, has already forged a reputation for his composure and command, earning plaudits at Valencia and on the international stage with Georgia.

“He will have to believe he is good enough to play for Liverpool, one of the toughest goalkeeping positions in world football,” James continued. “But he has played at major tournaments and international finals and excelled so I don’t think the occasion is going to faze him.”
Liverpool may not require Mamardashvili to start immediately — but that’s precisely what makes this move intriguing. The modern game rarely allows young goalkeepers the luxury of time. Yet at Anfield, the Georgian may find growth through delayed gratification.
“It will just be interesting if he doesn’t start the season how motivated he will be to wait for his opportunities, because he will get opportunities,” said James.
In some ways, the question isn’t whether Mamardashvili is ready to challenge Alisson — but whether he is willing to wait until the chance inevitably arrives. Cup fixtures, international breaks, and the wear-and-tear of a gruelling season mean opportunities will come.
Liverpool’s decision to bring him in now — a year after agreeing terms — speaks to long-term planning. Mamardashvili may not be the present, but he’s certainly part of the future. And in James’ view, he’s already preparing to take centre stage when the lights fall his way.
