The new Owls owner is wasting no time

Sheffield Wednesday’s horror 25/26 campaign has finally concluded, and with that comes optimism for what is to come.

The Owls are experiencing a significant uplift following new owner David Storch - and Arise Capital’s - acquisition of the club.

Their final day celebrations saw the club’s badge reverted to the classic emblem, a new CEO named in David Bruce, and the wiping of the -15 point deduction anticipated in League One next season.

For a fanbase that has spent much of the last 14 months fearing for the club’s very existence, the mood shift around Hillsborough has been striking.

Administration, relegation and off-field uncertainty created an atmosphere of near-constant anxiety, but the closing days of the campaign instead felt like the beginning of something new.

Storch’s hard work hasn’t stopped there, however - he is now turning his attention to the playing side.

Sheffield Wednesday eye experienced recruitment addition

Reporting on his Patreon, Alan Nixon has written that the Owls are looking for a new ‘transfer guru’.

Wednesday have reportedly made an experienced Head of Recruitment their top target - though he is currently working at another club, and compensation and notice period will complicate any deal.

Nixon claims the club are looking for someone who knows the league well.

It’s the next impressive move in David Storch’s new backroom, which has already seen a new head scout join David Bruce within his first week in charge.

Nixon further reports that the new head scout - and as yet appointed transfer expert - will be looking for Championship free agents and loans, but may have scope for more economical signings involving fees.

Huge summer rebuild faces David Storch and Sheffield Wednesday

The enormity of the rebuild ahead cannot really be overstated. Wednesday may have emerged from administration with their identity, stadium and future intact, but the football operation itself remains stripped back to the bone.

A retained list has still not materialised and, in truth, there are barely enough senior players left at Hillsborough to form the spine of a League One squad. Survival off the pitch was only the first step.

That is why the pace of Storch’s opening weeks is so important. Symbolism has played its part, but sentiment alone does not win promotion from League One.

Wednesday have 91 days before the new season starts and an extraordinary amount of work to do within that timeframe.

Recruitment, contracts, infrastructure, staffing and culture all require attention simultaneously, particularly after years in which almost every department at Hillsborough was allowed to stagnate.

The reported move for an experienced recruitment figure feels especially significant in that context.

Under Dejphon Chansiri, Wednesday lurched from window to window without any coherent long-term strategy, leaving successive managers and temporary heads of recruitment to firefight with unbalanced squads and shrinking resources.

There are early indications that Storch understands that reality. His social media tease of further announcements next week hinted at an ownership group conscious that momentum cannot be allowed to stall.

The mood around Hillsborough has shifted remarkably quickly from despair to anticipation, but that goodwill will eventually need substance behind it.
