Dean Huijsen has been ruled out of Spain’s upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Georgia and Bulgaria after being declared unfit.
The Spanish Football Federation confirmed that the young defender has returned to Real Madrid following medical examinations.
Huijsen, who joined Madrid during the summer transfer window, has quickly become a key figure in Xabi Alonso’s defence.
However, his progress has been halted after showing signs of muscle fatigue while on international duty.
The 20-year-old arrived at Spain’s training camp in Elche on Monday night already feeling discomfort.
He did not take part in training the following day. When his condition showed no improvement, a further medical examination was carried out on Wednesday morning.
The Spanish federation subsequently confirmed that Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte has been called up as a replacement.
Spain will host Georgia in Elche before facing Bulgaria in Valladolid. Manager Luis de la Fuente will be keen to collect all six points from these fixtures.
Huijsen will now focus on his recovery during the international break and bid to be available for Madrid’s next league match against Getafe on October 19.
His absence is a setback for Spain and Madrid, as he has been in fine form since the start of the season.
