Deives on Paulista final: Corinthians fans' support key

On the evening of last Tuesday (2), Corinthians hosted Magnus at the Wlamir Marques Gymnasium for the first leg of the Paulista Futsal Championship final and ended up being defeated by a score of 3-2. The goals for the Alvinegro were scored by Deives and Marlon. After the match, the number 10 and Corinthians idol gave an interview to the press and analyzed the first chapter of the final.

The pivot stated that, in the return match, Corinthians needs to play like they did in the last 20 minutes of the game, when they scored both goals: “I believe what’s missing is for us to play the full 40 minutes like we played the last 20. In the first half, we were way below our usual level. I think we were at a completely different pace than what we've been showing in other games. We’ll have 40 minutes to turn the game around there in Sorocaba. We are fully confident that we can go there and turn it around. It’s a classic. Just like they won here, we’ve also gone there and won titles. And I’m sure we’ll have our fans’ support there for the full 40 or 50 minutes to cheer us on and help us win the title. But I think we need to take the possibility of our second-half performance to Sorocaba,” he began.

Later, he was asked about the strong presence of the Corinthians fans in the classic against their Sorocaba rivals. Over six thousand fans attended at the Wlamir Marques Gymnasium: “I think here we amplify everything, right? Both the negative and the positive. It was a moment that maybe wasn’t supposed to happen, but it did and we have to praise what the fans did today, incredible. Incredible, really. The energy we have here is surreal. I always asked for the fans’ support, and the fans are embracing our sport. And as I said, I think we have to take this as a lesson, not repeat what we did in the first half and play a second half there for the full 50 minutes to bring home the title.“

Next, he responded to whether the confusion right after Corinthians’ two goals, involving the opposing players and the Corinthians fans, ended up disrupting the Alvinegro’s momentum in the match. The game was even paused for a few moments.

“We can’t say anything for sure, obviously we were at a moment where we were suffocating the opposing team, they were cornered and we were really strong in the game, but it happened and we can’t keep lamenting. We have to think about the episode itself, it gave them a breather, I believe they caught their breath, adjusted their clean goalkeeper defense a bit, but that wasn’t what changed it, I think our first-half attitude was crucial for the result of the game.”

“It’s really a security issue, we know that when it comes to Corinthians, the stakes are a bit higher. I believe that if it were in another gym, the game would have resumed sooner, but they opted for safety. The match delegate called me over, called their team captain as well to talk about it and said the game would only resume when it was safe for everyone playing, and we have to understand that, it’s part of it,” he added.

Deives was asked about how to switch focus from one competition to another, since on the next Tuesday, the 9th, at 9pm (Brasília time), the Alvinegro will face Jaraguá in the first leg of the National Futsal League (LNF) final. He also took the opportunity to call on the Fiel Torcida for the return leg of the national tournament final, on December 13, Saturday, at 7pm, at the Wlamir Marques Gymnasium.

“I think we have to focus on the Paulista Championship first, these are two competitions, two finals. We’re coming off a tough semifinal, end of season, but man, we’re in a position every team wants to be in, it’s a huge privilege. We have to try to do our best here at the club and outside as well, so that when we get to the games, we’re ready. For now, we have to focus on Sorocaba, go after the Paulista title, and then, after the game against Sorocaba, prepare for the National League final. I’d also like to call on our fans, though I don’t even need to say it, today was incredible, I believe the National League final will be a very special moment, my last game at Parque São Jorge, a National League final, man, incredible... So let’s call on the fans even more, who are already doing their part, and really just thank them for what they’ve been doing for futsal in this final stretch.“

The number 10 also spoke about the possibility of having a statue at Parque São Jorge after a victorious career in two spells with the Corinthians shirt. In total, he has scored over 300 goals and played in 23 finals, winning the National League twice (2016 and 2022), as well as tournaments like the Paulista Championship, São Paulo Cup, and the Mucho Más International Tournament in Spain.

“Man, that’s something that’s hard to talk about, I’ll leave it up to the club if they think there should be a tribute. I’d be very honored because I never hid from anyone the love I have for Corinthians and the dedication I’ve always had for the club, the commitment. And I always say it’s a marriage that was perfect, that worked out, but I really want to finish this nearly ten-year journey with both titles if possible and with the presence of the fans. These tributes, I believe they’ll happen, but very naturally. I think the main thing is for us to work within our environment so that we finish the year with both final trophies and with four titles in the season“, he concluded.

Now, Corinthians will return to the court next Saturday at 11am (Brasília time), at Arena Sorocaba, against Magnus, for the second leg of the Paulista Futsal Championship final.
