FC Bayern will face Union Berlin in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. On FCBinside you can follow the match in the LIVETICKER and discuss the game with the community
It’s the clash that will set the tone for both clubs: for Bayern, because they finally want to return to the final in Berlin after five years, and for Union, because the Köpenickers are hoping for another big cup adventure after their Bundesliga draw against the record champions
The starting position is clear. Munich have a November behind them which, despite four wins, also revealed weaknesses. The 2-2 draw in the league at the Alte Försterei not only halted Bayern’s historic winning streak, but also once again showed their vulnerability in set-piece situations. „After the last game at Union, Kompany doesn’t have to explain to anyone what’s coming – everyone knows that now,“ said sporting director Max Eberl ahead of the new clash
Union Berlin will go into the match with a mixture of frustration and courage. The defeat against Heidenheim may have left its mark, but Steffen Baumgart’s team is always an uncomfortable opponent at home. The coach sums it up: „We’ve had a blow to the back of the neck and have another highlight ahead of us.“ Union will again try to get into the game through duels, set pieces and quick switching

Vincent Kompany knows what to expect – and what it takes to lead Bayern through a game like this. „You can say a lot of things, but I can’t talk us into the final. It takes work, attitude and hunger,“ explained the Belgian. His team must show that it has learned the right lessons from the draw against Union and also from the defeat against Arsenal
One important aspect: the goalkeeping duel is no longer an issue in the cup. After two rounds with Jonas Urbig, Manuel Neuer will return to the Bayern goal for the round of 16. „Manu is back in goal,“ confirmed Kompany. There will be no division between cup and league keeper
In sporting terms, it will be a tactical battle between Kompany’s structured possession game and Baumgart’s physical, passionate approach. Bayern will be looking to impress with their individual quality and greater efficiency in the final third. Union will be investing everything to spring another surprise this time
ZDF will be showing the match live from 20:15, with commentary from Gari Paubandt and moderated by Jochen Breyer, with Per Mertesacker as the pundit. Sky will be broadcasting in parallel on Sky Sport 2 and Sky Sport News, as well as on SkyGo and WOW
After the round of 16, Bayern are determined to progress to the Olympic Stadium – the path once again leads via Berlin. Now it’s up to the team to take the next step.
