Virgil van Dijk’s last-gasp winner condemned Atletico Madrid to a frustrating defeat in their Champions League opener on Wednesday night, but the Spaniards’ evening went from bad to worse as manager Diego Simeone was sent off in injury time.
Atletico trailed Liverpool 2-0 after just six minutes, but Marcos Llorente’s brace had the visitors back in contention with the match clock dwindling. Until, that is, Van Dijk intervened with a powerful header in the 92nd minute to ensure the hosts took the spoils.
Simeone was caught up in the emotion of the moment after the winner, and was goaded into a reaction by one home supporter’s taunts.
After a touchline spat cleared both benches, Simeone was dismissed by referee Maurizio Mariani, casting doubt on his involvement in future Champions League meetings with Eintracht Frankfurt, Arsenal, and Union Saint-Gilloise.
Speaking post-match, he explained his side of the story: “When they scored the third goal he turned around and insulted me. I'm a person, I'm human.
"Obviously my reaction is not justifiable, I insulted him. But it was 90 minutes of being insulted the whole time. It is not that easy.”
Simeone is set to serve a one-match touchline ban after being sent off post-match at Anfield.
UEFA regulations read: “As a rule, a player or team official sent off by the referee is automatically suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition (i.e. UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Conference League or UEFA Super Cup).
“In the event of a serious offence, the UEFA disciplinary bodies are entitled to augment this punishment, including by extending it to other competitions.”
Atletico will face Arsenal on Champions League matchday three, meaning Simeone will serve his ban as the Rojiblancos host Eintracht Frankfurt next week and return to the dugout in N5.
Atletico do have the option to appeal the suspension, though, and could have it struck off altogether.
