Today, mourners will gather to commemorate the life of footballing legend Denis Law following his passing on January 17.
Manchester United’s beloved ‘King of the Stretford End’ enjoyed an illustrious playing career at both club and international level, most notably for the Red Devils and his native Scotland, for whom he earned 55 caps and scored 30 goals – a joint goalscoring record shared with Kenny Dalglish.
Law also oversaw two spells with United’s arch-rivals Manchester City, initially from 1960 to 1961 and then from 1973 to 1974.
He scored the most goals of any United player in a single season when netting 46 times in 42 matches across the 1963/1964 term, after which his stellar efforts saw him rightfully rewarded with the Ballon d’Or – the first Red in history to claim the lucrative award.

The Lawman forms one-third of the club’s iconic Trinity Statue outside Old Trafford, displaying the prolific frontman alongside late United legends Sir Bobby Charlton and George Best.
Numerous players, past and present, will attend today’s service at Manchester Cathedral to pay their respects to Law, with the likes of Ruud van Nistelrooy and Bryan Robson already being pictured amongst the crowd.
Fans were taken aback to learn that, of the club’s hierarchy, just one representative of INEOS will be attending – and it’s not INEOS CEO Sir Jim Ratcliffe, nor a member of the Glazer family, as Sir Dave Brailsford is the only ownership figure expected to be present.
“I hope what I’m reading isn’t true – No Ratcliffe or Glazers at Denis Law’s funeral? If that’s true, it’s a disgrace,” said Richard Keys on X/Twitter. “Ratcliffe has no excuses. He should be ashamed. And RIP John Tudor – a one-time Sky Blue. John was fantastic alongside SuperMac. My thoughts are with his family.”
