„Do your homework first“: Bayern boss reveals summer transfer plan

FC Bayern are working hard on their squad of the future, but in a clear order. While numerous names have been circulating in recent weeks about possible new arrivals, the Munich club have deliberately kept a low profile on the transfer market so far. Chief Sports Officer Max Eberl has now made it clear why this is the case – and has set clear priorities

The focus is currently not on external new arrivals, but on so-called „internal transfers“, i.e. the current and upcoming contract extensions of key players. „We first want to resolve the internal transfers in order to know how to proceed afterwards. Once this homework has been done, we can move on,“ explained Eberl on Friday

The record champions only want to take concrete steps towards the transfer summer of 2026 once there is clarity about their own squad structure

Contract clarity as the basis for squad planning

Serge Gnabry has already extended his contract, Dayot Upamecano is about to do so. FC Bayern are also in talks with Harry Kane, albeit without formal negotiations as yet. They are also working on long-term prospects with Konrad Laimer. For Eberl, all of these personnel are crucial in determining the future course – both in sporting and financial terms

The defensive situation in particular plays a central role in this. „If things work out with Upa, we know that we are well positioned in defence for next season,“ emphasised the sporting director. Such decisions have a direct influence on whether and where FC Bayern needs to make external additions – and to what financial extent

Eberl rejects criticism of Bayern’s transfer strategy

Eberl did not accept the criticism that FC Bayern had been active on the transfer market too late in the summer of 2025. Looking back, he made it clear that the squad planning had already been completed early on. „There was a lot of talk last summer, but we were still finished with the squad planning after the Club World Cup,“ said the 52-year-old

Only the situation surrounding Kingsley Coman had arisen at short notice. The Frenchman had approached the club with a transfer request, which they then resolved together. „We resolved that with Nicolas Jackson,“ said Eberl – an example of how Bayern can certainly react when new constellations arise

Despite the current focus on contract work, however, this does not mean that the Munich club are inactive. Eberl expressly emphasized that the market is already being closely monitored. „But it is clear that it is running in parallel. We know exactly what we want to do,“ he explained. Ideas and plans have long been in place, but will only become concrete once the internal course has been set

According to consistent media reports, the focus for the coming transfer periods is primarily on a new left winger, a long-term solution for the right side of defence and possible adjustments in central midfield – especially in view of the imminent departure of Leon Goretzka. But before new names become reality, FC Bayern has a clear principle: first clarity in its own squad, then movement on the market.
