Eddie Howe says no decision has been made on Sandro Tonali’s involvement in Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby, while Lewis Miley, Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar are out until after the international break.
According to Sunderland Echo, Tonali, a reported £55m signing from AC Milan in summer 2023, impressed in a 1-1 first leg against Barcelona last week, then sustained a groin and hip issue during the 7-2 defeat at Camp Nou. A scan showed the problem is not as bad as first feared, but his availability remains uncertain.
Howe will assess the Italy midfielder today and make a late call closer to kick-off. He confirmed the sidelined trio are not expected back before the break.
Sunderland head to Tyneside aiming for a league double after an own goal by Magpies club record signing Nick Woltemade decided December’s meeting at the Stadium of Light. That victory marked another step in the Black Cats’ impressive Premier League return.
Howe has urged his players to draw on the emotions from that defeat and focus on delivering a strong performance for the fans and the city. He stressed the importance of preparation and recovery, adding the squad face eight significant games to finish the season.
