Newcastle are facing a tricky run of matches, visiting Aston Villa in the FA Cup on Saturday before flying to Azerbaijan for a Champions League meeting with Qarabag and facing Manchester City at the Etihad.

They have struggled with injuries throughout this campaign as they push to confirm a place in next season’s Champions League, and may well face this crucial run of fixtures without the services of club captain Guimaraes - and four of his team-mates.

The Brazil midfielder started in the 2-1 midweek defeat of Tottenham, but limped off in second-half injury time with what appeared to be a painful hamstring injury.

Speaking ahead of facing Villa, Howe said he was still unsure how long the player would be out.

"Bruno - we are awaiting news on his hamstring injury,” he explained. “We are waiting for the full extent on the injury.”

His international team-mate Joelinton is also on the physio’s table with a groin injury sustained against Aston Villa in late January, but Howe suggested he could feature in Azerbaijan next week.

“Joelinton is doing really well. I don’t think he’ll make this game (against Aston Villa) but he’s not going to be too far away beyond this game.

“He’s desperate to be back involved as he normally is. That’s a great sign for us. It means he’s feeling good about his body and he’s very positive.”

In other Newcastle injury news, Lewis Miley is nearing a return from a bad knock which saw him miss out against Tottenham, but Tino Livramento is set to remain sidelined through next month.

Howe continued: “With Lewis, we’re waiting sort of day by day.

“He’s got, sort of, a dead leg. He got a bad knock to, I think, his thigh.

“I think there’s a little bit of muscle damage on the knock so he’s having scans every few days to see how that is.

“We don’t think it’s going to be long-term. Hopefully be back pretty quickly so let’s wait and see on that one.

“Tino is on track. I think early March was the diagnosis for the return to play.

“At the moment he’s back on the grass, he’s running, he’s building his fitness back up and we’re happy with how he’s doing.”

Emil Krafth, though, has been described as “not close” to returning.
