Eduardo Camavinga will not be fit in time for Real Madrid’s La Liga trip to Real Sociedad this weekend.
The 22-year-old midfielder injured his right ankle in training shortly before the start of the campaign and has been sidelined since.
Madrid had hoped the international break would give him enough time to recover, but he has yet to complete a full training session with the squad.
The club are taking a cautious approach with the France international, who missed Madrid’s final six matches of the season and the Club World Cup campaign.
Camavinga’s absence continues a frustrating run of injuries that have interrupted his progress in Spain.
He was restricted to 35 appearances last term, missing long spells with knee ligament damage and two separate hamstring problems.
His current injury means he has not played a competitive game since April, and Madrid want to avoid rushing him back given the demanding schedule ahead.
He is now targeting a possible return for Tuesday’s Champions League opener against Marseille, though his involvement remains uncertain.
The Frenchman’s versatility has made him one of Madrid’s most important squad players since joining in 2021, able to feature as a holding midfielder or in a more advanced role.
With Aurelien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde and Arda Guler already central to manager Xabi Alonso’s plans, Camavinga’s recovery would add valuable depth to the midfield.
Madrid are also without Jude Bellingham, Endrick and Ferland Mendy for the trip to San Sebastian.
Bellingham, who underwent shoulder surgery in July, has stepped up his training and hopes to return later in September, although October is a more likely timeframe.
Madrid have started the season strongly, and Saturday’s clash at Anoeta will provide another test of their squad’s resilience.
For Camavinga, the priority is finally getting back on the pitch after a stop-start year that has tested both his patience and Madrid’s resources.
