Sunderland have opted against triggering a one-year option in Harrison Jones’ contract, leaving the Academy of Light graduate free to depart when his deal expires this summer, Sunderland Echo understands.

The Wearside-born midfielder made his senior debut in August 2024, coming on for the final 20 minutes of a Carabao Cup first round defeat against then-Championship rivals Preston North End.

He has since made six further first-team appearances, including two starts under Regis Le Bris during the final month of last season’s promotion to the Premier League. Those starts came over a year after his first senior start, an FA Cup third round defeat by Stoke City, a milestone he said fulfilled a dream.

This season his senior involvement has been limited to one start in a Carabao Cup loss to Huddersfield Town in August. He has been an unused substitute in 12 Premier League matches and was on the bench for last month’s Tyne-Wear derby win at Newcastle.

EFL clubs explored a January loan before an injury in a Premier League International Cup game against Borussia Dortmund curtailed any move. Since returning, Jones has captained the Under-21s and scored a fine free-kick in a 2-1 defeat to Derby County earlier this week.

Scouts watched that match and he is believed to have interest from League One and League Two sides, as well as several in the Scottish Premiership. At least five EFL clubs and two north of the border have already indicated a willingness to discuss a deal as his time with the Black Cats draws to a close.
