Sunderland will let Academy of Light graduate Harrison Jones leave this summer after deciding not to trigger his one-year option. Sunderland Echo understands that the versatile midfielder has been told he is free to go when his contract ends.

He made his senior debut in August 2024, coming on for the final 20 minutes of a Carabao Cup first-round defeat at then-Championship rivals Preston North End.

He has since made six further first-team appearances, with two starts under Regis Le Bris during the final month of last season’s successful push into the Premier League.

That followed his first senior start in an FA Cup third-round loss to Stoke City more than a year earlier, after which he described a surreal breakthrough, praised Dan Neil’s guidance and pointed to a clear pathway for young players.

This season, Jones started only the August Carabao Cup defeat to Huddersfield Town, though he was an unused substitute in 12 Premier League fixtures and was on the bench for last month’s Tyne-Wear derby win at Newcastle.

A planned January loan was curtailed by an injury suffered in a Premier League International Cup tie against Borussia Dortmund. Since returning, he has captained the Under-21s and scored a fine free-kick in a 2-1 defeat to Derby County this week.

Scouts were in attendance and he is attracting interest from League One and League Two clubs and from the Scottish Premiership, with at least five EFL sides and two north of the border open to talks.
