The winter transfer window has slammed shut for another season in Europe’s top leagues and there was plenty of business to keep an eye on.
Premier League clubs spent big again, but what about deals elsewhere across Europe? Here are eight transfers you might have missed.
Luis Enrique’s lack of faith in his forwards saw Randal Kolo Muani ushered out of the exit door at Paris Saint-Germain. A €90m signing just 18 months ago, Kolo Muani was informed he was free to leave in the winter window.
Despite a wealth of suitors in the Premier League, Kolo Muani instead decided to head to Juventus. He’s started impressively in Turin with three goals in his first two Serie A appearances, more than he managed in the first six months of the season at PSG.
Thiago Almada is a talent who has regularly been linked with Europe’s top five leagues and has finally made a long-awaited switch across the Atlantic.
A highly-rated midfielder, Almada has two goals in six caps for Argentina at international level. After initially shunning European interest to sign for Atlanta United, he joined Botafogo for a record-breaking MLS and and Brazilian league fee in June.
Lyon have now agreed a deal to sign the 23-year-old on loan to boost their hopes of European qualification.
AC Milan’s search for a new striker landed at Santiago Gimenez, who joined the Rossoneri for a fee in the region of £30m from Feyenoord. The Mexico international caught the attention of Europe’s elite in Rotterdam, where he plundered 65 goals in 105 appearances. That return includes five in this season’s Champions League and he now forms part of Sergio Conceicao’s rebuild at the San Siro. Gimenez will wear the number seven shirt, once worn by a certain Andriy Shevchenko.
Gimenez’s arrival at Milan paved the path for Alvaro Morata to move on. The Spaniard has joined the growing list of former Serie A forwards in the Turkish Süper Lig, signing on loan for champions Galatasaray.
Okan Buruk had been keen to reinforce his forward line despite the presence of Victor Osimhen, with Mauro Icardi ruled out for the rest of the season. The arrival of Spain’s Euro 2024-winning captain is a solid replacement.
Saudi Pro League spending has not quite been as extravagant as past windows but there have still been some eye-catching arrivals. In addition to Jhon Duran’s €77m move to Al Nassr, Al-Ahli completed the signing of Galeno from FC Porto for €50m (£41.5m).
The Brazilian impressed in last season’s Champions League with eight goal involvements in seven appearances. This season, the 27-year-old has eight goals in 17 Primeira Liga games.
Burnley’s addition of Marcus Edwards to their promotion-chasing side certainly feels like a coup. The winger has shone on the European stage since leaving Tottenham for Portuguese football and joins on loan from Sporting Lisbon. His pace and trickery will inject new life into the Clarets’ forward line and Burnley, as ever, delivered with their unveiling.
Hirving Lozano has headed back across The Atlantic to sign for MLS side San Diego. One of Mexico’s most successful exports in recent seasons, Lozano won league titles with PSV Eindhoven and Napoli during his time in Europe.
Still just 29, he will be a headline addition for the new MLS season, in a City that borders his native Mexico. He will hope to become one of the division’s star Mexican attractions, after the recent success of compatriots Carlos Vela and Javier Hernandez.
It’s a sign of the strength of the Premier League that the Serie A leaders are looking to Bournemouth for mid-season additions. Antonio Conte has beefed up his Napoli midfield with the arrival of Philip Billing on loan from the south coast side. The Denmark international has struggled for minutes this season but joins a Napoli side top of the table in Italy and chasing the Scudetto.
