As we all know, when I got to Esperance, things didn’t go as I expected,” Mokwana admitted. However, the narrative shifted with a loan move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hazem. It was there that a crucial partnership with coach Jalel Kadri became the catalyst for his revival. He was working with me with extra sessions, and he always believed in me, and he told me that I’ll get back into the team,” Mokwana shared, crediting Kadri for the transformative support.

This renewed belief translated directly onto the pitch. “But when I made the move to Al-Hazem, I think I started to enjoy myself a little bit better, training well, and the coach also was encouraging me each and every day, and he also believed in me. That’s why, I guess, I’m starting to pick up my form again,” he explained. His consistent performances in Saudi Arabia ultimately caught the discerning eye of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, paving his way back to the national squad for the AFCON tournament—a redemption arc sealed through perseverance and pivotal mentorship.
