A surprising recall to the South African national team has sparked reflection for winger Elias Mokwana, who is now opening up about a difficult chapter in his career that nearly derailed his international ambitions.

Mokwana’s journey took an unexpected turn following his high-profile move to Tunisian powerhouse Esperance. The transition, far from smooth, led to a significant loss of form and confidence. “It wasn’t easy at first. As we all know, when I got to Esperance, things didn’t go as I expected,” Mokwana admitted. The struggle was so profound that it cast a shadow over his future with Bafana Bafana. “I think I did lose some hope at some point,” he revealed candidly, acknowledging the mental toll of his experience abroad.

However, the narrative shifted with a loan move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hazem. It was there that a crucial partnership with coach Jalel Kadri became the catalyst for his revival. Kadri’s faith and personalized approach became the cornerstone of Mokwana’s recovery. “… with my coach, I think I had hope. He gave me hope. He was working with me with extra sessions, and he always believed in me, and he told me that I’ll get back into the team,” Mokwana shared, crediting Kadri for the transformative support.

This renewed belief translated directly onto the pitch. “But when I made the move to Al-Hazem, I think I started to enjoy myself a little bit better, training well, and the coach also was encouraging me each and every day, and he also believed in me. That’s why, I guess, I’m starting to pick up my form again,” he explained. His consistent performances in Saudi Arabia ultimately caught the discerning eye of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, paving his way back to the national squad for the AFCON tournament—a redemption arc sealed through perseverance and pivotal mentorship.
