Ghana have sacked head coach Otto Addo 72 days before the start of the World Cup 2026 after a run of poor results in preparation for the tournament.

The decision to part ways with the manager comes after Addo oversaw four consecutive defeats including 5-1 and 2-1 losses to Austria and Germany respectively in the past week.

The Black Stars also failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations under Addo’s leadership and the Ghana Football Association released a statement saying they had “parted ways” with the manager “effective immediately”.

That statement reads: “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has pated ways with Head Coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo effective immediately.

“The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.

“The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course.”

Ghana have been drawn in England’s group for the World Cup and will take on Thomas Tuchel’s men during their second match of the tournament on June 23 in Massachusetts. They also face Panama in Toronto on June 17 and Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.

The World Cup, which is being held in Canada, Mexico and the USA, runs from 11 June to 19 July.

Addo won 15 caps for Ghana during his playing career and took over the Black Stars for a second spell as head coach in March 2024 having been allowed to leave Borussia Dortmund where he underwent the role of talent coach.

The 50-year-old had previously coached Ghana on an interim basis in 2022, including at the World Cup in Qatar. During the tournament Ghana beat South Korea but were eliminated in the group stage and they will hope for a stronger performance this summer.
