Sunderland forward Ethan Moore says he has moved on mentally and physically from an injury nightmare, with the 21-year-old chasing minutes on loan at Gateshead and a strong finish to the season.

The striker suffered a serious knee injury in March 2023 and spent almost two years in rehab. After 887 days out he returned in August for Sunderland’s Under-21s in a 3-2 defeat at Southampton, then made 17 further outings. “I am definitely moving towards where I want to be. I feel like I’ve moved on mentally and physically now and I’m just looking forwards,” he told Sunderland Echo.

A January switch to the National League has given him senior minutes under Rob Elliot. He has seven appearances, the latest off the bench in Tuesday’s 3-1 home win over title contenders York City.

Moore is into the final weeks of his Sunderland contract and wants to show his worth. “I just want to play as many minutes as I can and show everyone what I can do,” he said.

Gateshead’s outlook has brightened after they were 11 points from safety six weeks ago. A run of just two defeats in their last 11 matches has lifted them out of the relegation zone before Yeovil Town visit this weekend.

With Non-League Day on Saturday, the club are targeting a 2,000 crowd. “We need that support here because we still have a lot of work to do so it would be great to see supporters getting down here on Saturday and getting behind us,” Moore said.
