Jordan Pickford agreeing terms on a new long-term deal with Everton marks more than a routine contract update. It is a statement of intent from a club eager to convince the football world that stability and ambition are finally aligning at Goodison Park.
Sky Sports News confirmed that Pickford “has agreed terms on a new four-year deal” and is expected to sign it before Everton’s upcoming clash with Manchester City. Earlier reports from September emphasised Everton’s desire for him “to stay for the rest of his career” and that wish now appears close to reality. His current contract runs until 2027, but the new extension could keep him beyond his 36th birthday.
Pickford is currently in his ninth season at the club and remains Thomas Tuchel’s consistent first-choice for England, regardless of Everton’s recent battles against relegation. To retain a goalkeeper of his calibre in those circumstances speaks to a mutual trust between player and club.

Everton reportedly believe Pickford is “happy, settled and open to the idea of committing the majority (possibly all) of his remaining years at the highest level to the club.” That kind of language is rarely used unless there is confidence behind the scenes.
What is particularly notable is the wider context surrounding this renewal. Sky Sports News revealed the club is banking on “the positivity of the new stadium; new ownership; the encouraging upturn in form under David Moyes; and a successful summer transfer window in which the signing of Jack Grealish has been a real signal of the club’s ambitions.”
Those factors represent a shift from firefighting to future planning. Everton want Pickford not just as a goalkeeper, but as a figurehead for the next chapter.
Everton travel to the Etihad on Saturday, but for once the conversation around the club is not about survival or damage limitation. With Pickford’s deal close, Grealish now in blue, and Moyes restoring identity, there is a growing sense that Everton are building rather than merely enduring.
If the signature arrives before kick-off, it could be the symbolic start of Everton 2.0.
From an Evertonian perspective, this feels massive. Pickford staying puts an end to years of anxiety about losing key assets just as they hit their prime. Some fans might question the length of the deal, especially if it takes him well into his mid-thirties, but goalkeepers age differently. If anything, Pickford is entering his peak.
The mention of the new stadium, new ownership and Jack Grealish arriving makes things even more exciting. It has been a long time since Everton have genuinely looked like an attractive project for top players, yet suddenly the narrative is changing.
What stands out here is trust. Pickford could have waited to see how things played out or even angled for a move to a Champions League club. Instead, he appears ready to be the face of the project. That sends a message not just to fans, but to the rest of the squad. If England’s No.1 is willing to commit, others have no excuse to hedge their bets.
Now it is on the board to back up this faith with continued ambition. Keep building around him and Everton might finally stop living in hope and start operating with expectation.
