Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford produced one of the saves of the season to ensure his side took all three points back to Merseyside after a 3-2 win at St James' Park.

In an entertaining encounter, Everton took the lead inside the first 20 minutes from a corner. James Garner floated in a cross to the near post that Jarrad Branthwaite nodded into the far corner for the defender's first goal in 22 months.

From that point on the game followed the pattern of Newcastle United equalising before immediately conceding.

The Magpies made it 1-1 in the 32rd minute when Jacob Ramsey picked up the ball on the edge of the area and fired a shot that took a deflection before finding its way into the net.

Then, just seconds later Everton were ahead again albeit with the help of a Nick Pope error. Dwight McNeil had time and space to send a curling effort that Pope managed to keep out but his save didn't push the shot wide and instead went the other way allowing Beto to charge in and fire into an empty net.

It was 2-2 in the 82nd minute and again it was a shot on the edge of the area, this time from Jacob Murphy, that went through bodies and was deflected before nestling into the corner.

Directly from the restart Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall had space on the left and squared the ball for Thierno Barry who was bundled over but managed to put the ball into the net on his way down.

Newcastle almost made it 3-3 late on when Sandro Tonali unleashed an effort that looked destined for the net only to be denied by a world class save from Pickford.

That result means Everton are up to eight in the table while Newcastle are in 12th after suffering a 12th defeat of the season.
