Inter Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu feels that the Nerazzurri could’ve beaten Man City, but is fine with a point.
The Turkish international spoke to Amazon Prime, via FCInterNews, after his team’s Champions League opening day draw.
Inter had the toughest of assignments to begin their Champions League campaign.
The Nerazzurri travelled to England to face Premier League juggernauts Manchester City at the Etihad.
This was a rematch of the 2023 Champions League final. Inter had acquitted themselves well with their performance in that match – but still ended up losing.
This time around, though, the Nerazzurri managed to go toe-to-toe with City and get a result for their troubles.
It was not the win that Inter will have been hoping for.
The Nerazzurri were not able to turn any of the handful of promising counterattacking situations that they had into goals to take three points.
But at the other end, Inter kept City largely very quiet.
At least until the last few minutes of the match, Inter held the English giants at arm’s length.
After the match, Inter midfielder Calhanoglu said that “I think everyone was happy.”
“We enjoyed ourselves playing against such a strong team,” the 30-year-old continued.
Calhanoglu insisted that “We could’ve won.”
“But we showed with the right kind of courage and sacrifice, we can compete even with the biggest teams.”
“We can be completely,” Calhanoglu said of Inter’s performance.
“Now we want to keep going like this,” the Turk continued. “Prove that this is where Inter belongs.”
“Playing these teams on their home grounds isn’t easy,” Calhanoglu continued. “But we did well. We enjoyed our football.”
“I think that both teams will be happy with the points. We wanted the three points but we can still be happy.”
As for whether he is thinking about the derby against AC Milan now, Calhanoglu replied “Not now.”
“I have to relax and regain my energy. But starting from tomorrow.”
