The Liverpool star took the headlines on Saturday night despite not featuring at all in the Reds’ dramatic 3-3 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road.

The Egyptian raised doubts over his future at Anfield, claiming he’s been scapegoated by the club for their poor form this season, having now spent the last three games on the bench.

This led to the Sky Sports pundit and former defender to criticise the 33-year-old on their flagship Monday Night Football programme prior to Manchester United’s 4-1 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Carragher branded Salah as a disgrace in an eight-minute critique of the forward, who has scored 250 goals from 420 appearances for the club since joining from AS Roma in 2017.

Elmohamady has posted on social media his defence of his former Egypt national team teammate, criticising Carragher for his attack on the Liverpool legend.

Carragher was critical of the forward’s lack of success at national level, but the former Hull defender has made it clear that Salah is beloved in his home country for the role he’s played for the team over the years, including ending their 28-year wait for a return to the World Cup.

“Right Jamie, you’re a disgrace,” wrote Elmohamady, via his personal X account.

“Salah completely rewrote his story through hard work, humility, and world-class performances.

“He didn’t “fail” at Chelsea — he was never given the chance.

“He went to Italy, rebuilt himself, then came to Liverpool and became: A Premier League legend, Egypt’s greatest ever player, one of the most consistent forwards of his generation.

“Salah has carried Egypt for years.

“And getting Egypt qualified for [a] World Cup twice after so long, Salah earned everything.

“No wonder you got blanked by C. Ronaldo.

“No wonder [Lionel] Messi called you out.

“No wonder Mourinho said you were below average and not even in [the] top 1000 defenders in PL.”

Elmohamady spent the 2012-13 campaign on loan at Hull from Sunderland before making the move to Yorkshire on a permanent basis that summer.

The full-back played for the Tigers from 2013 to 2017 before signing for Aston Villa, which would prove to be the final step in his career.

The 38-year-old retired in 2021 following Aston Villa’s 11th place finish in the Premier League table.

Hull are currently ninth in the Championship under Sergej Jakirovic, with their sights set on earning a play-off place by the end of the campaign.

Ahmed Elmohamady highlights Jamie Carragher’s Egypt blindspot

Not for the first time, Carragher has opted to use Salah’s performances for Egypt as a reason to criticise him.

Elmohamady’s comments highlight that his record for his national team is extremely strong, and a lack of AFCON title (which he could still win next year) won’t be used against him by his fellow countrymen.

Egypt had also failed to qualify for a World Cup since 1990 prior to Salah’s pivotal role in their 2018 and 2022 successes.

Of course, the Liverpool equation of this saga will take most of the spotlight, but Elmohamady has offered a reminder that there is more to Salah than just his time at Anfield.
