FC Bayern are on the verge of a comeback that could have an impact on their entire attacking structure, with coach Vincent Kompany facing a challenge that is as comfortable as it is complex.
Jamal Musiala is on his way back into the team after months of injury and with him, a new puzzle for the starting eleven is coming into focus. Because the Bayern offense is running at full speed even without him. In his Sky column, Lothar Matthäus describes the situation as follows: „For a coach, the best thing is to have a broad-based squad with high quality.“ He emphasizes: „The players push each other, the coach has to decide, talk to them and explain the situation to them.“
After his strong performance in the 3:1 win against Sporting Lisbon, including a goal and the „Man of the Match“ award, Lennart Karl scored again in the 2:2 draw against Mainz. The 17-year-old continues to confirm his strong form – both nationally and internationally.
Matthäus points to precisely this development as proof of the quality in the squad: „Kane didn’t know Lennart Karl back then, but I knew about Karl and a few other players at the back.“ For the record international, one thing is certain: „Bayern has a good squad.“

The return of Musiala will also have an impact on Serge Gnabry, but he is relaxed about the competitive situation: „It’s always there, no matter who is in the squad. Even if Jamal Musiala returns, not much will change. As long as I perform well and I’m fit, I’m not worried about it,“ said the international ahead of the game against Sporting. On the team chemistry, he explained: „Everyone is in a good mood, we’re in a good mood and everyone is in a good mood.“
Matthäus analyzes the tactical situation clearly: „Regardless of the system: Bayern have several options.“ Kompany can vary in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-4-1, depending on the demands of the game. „A six, an eight or sometimes a winger moving forward – that’s very flexible in soccer these days,“ said Matthäus.
The big challenge for the coach: „It will be interesting to see how Kompany manages this exciting task and how he keeps everyone happy.“ And he is convinced: „He has managed that well so far and will continue to do so.“
