Blues have brought in the Irish centre-back from the Premier League club.

Birmingham City have confirmed the loan signing of Brighton & Hove Albion centre-back Eiran Cashin.

The Irishman has been added to Chris Davies' already immense defensive option as part of a season-long deal. It will see him return to the Championship for the first time since he was bought by Brighton from Derby County in the last winter window in a £9 million deal.

Cashin was a key part of the Rams' backline both during their promotion-winning campaign in League One, in 2023/24, and upon their return to the second tier. He started 21 times for Paul Warne before being sold to the Seagulls. Only two appearances came his way once he made the jump up to the top flight.

Birmingham's "quality" move for Eiran Cashin

The opportunity to get more minutes under his belt in this temporary spell with Blues should be of benefit to both the player and his parent club, should he beat either Christoph Klarer or Phil Neumann to one of the starting centre-back spots in Davies' first XI. For Birmingham, it's another great bit of business, according to Don Goodman.

"Yeah, I think a move to Birmingham City from Brighton for Eiran Cashin on loan would be a win for all parties, really," the Sky Sports pundit exclusively told Football League World.

"He obviously struggled to break through in the face of fierce competition in those central defensive areas at Brighton Hove Albion last season. I think he only started two games from when he signed. [He] would have hoped for better, would have hoped for more game time.

"So alone back to a level where he's proven, certainly over the last two, three seasons, is going to be of benefit to Eiran Cashin, the player. It's going to be of benefit to Brighton in terms of his development, and it's going to be of benefit to Birmingham City in terms of them adding another quality level centre half for the Championship."

Birmingham's centre-back additions will come at a cost

It is frankly ridiculous the options that Birmingham, who were in the third tier of English football last season, have at centre-back. Cashin, Klarer and Neumann will be their frontline choices, but even behind them lurks Krystian Bielik and Dion Sanderson.

Even though two of them - Klarer and Neumann - have never played in the Championship, you could make the argument that they have a top four or five centre-back room in the division.

As we've seen up top with Alfie May, this high level of recruitment will probably come at the expense of one or two. Bielik and Sanderson will be the ones who will be moved on, if any of them do go, but that's no bad problem to have.
