Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has picked out one of his former teammates as a player that could instantly improve Pep Guardiola’s current squad.
The Argentine icon remains closely connected to the Etihad Stadium and often speaks glowingly about City’s continued evolution. With the squad having undergone major transformation since his departure, Aguero’s assessments carry weight among supporters.
His latest insight comes at a time when Manchester City continue to evolve following the arrivals of Rayan Cherki, Nico Gonzalez, and other younger talents in recent markets, while still maintaining the core identity that defined Aguero’s own era with the club.
Guardiola has repeatedly spoken about the foundations laid by players like Aguero, David Silva, Vincent Kompany, and Yaya Touré among others, making comparisons between generations a natural talking point. The idea of how legends might slot into the current structure often sparks debate, and Aguero’s view offers a unique player’s perspective.
Aguero’s admiration for the current squad also reflects the club’s long-term recruitment strategy and a combination of technical intelligence, adaptability, and consistency. His praise for several of the present stars further highlights the depth and balance City have worked hard to maintain across multiple campaigns.
Speaking exclusively to City Xtra on behalf of Stake, Sergio Aguero was quizzed on which members of the current City squad he sees as his favourite with the roster having changed significantly since his departure in 2021.
“I couldn’t name just one,” the Argentine legend admitted. “There are several players who are key in City’s squad.”
He continued, “I played with Bernardo [Silva] and I know everything he brings to the club. Same with Rodri. [Erling] Haaland is extraordinary and [Jeremy] Doku is having a great season.
“And I don’t want to forget about [Rayan] Cherki, who has an exquisite shot and great vision.”
Looking back on Aguero’s teammates from his time at the Etihad Stadium, the City legend was further asked on which of those stars would instantly improve Guardiola’s current roster.
“It’s difficult to say, because even though it’s the same team and the playing style remains, you have to see who would fit best at this stage,” said Aguero.
“Even so, great players adapt to everything very quickly. A David Silva, for example… although with different characteristics, today we have [Phil] Foden, a great player who, just like David, is capable of changing a match at any moment.”
Sergio Aguero’s comments will inevitably reignite discussion among Manchester City supporters regarding the greatest players in the club’s modern history. Many fans still consider David Silva the most naturally gifted to ever wear the shirt, and Aguero’s endorsement only strengthens that view.
The idea of a Silva from his prime operating alongside the likes of Rodri, Bernardo Silva, and Phil Foden in Pep Guardiola’s possession-heavy structure is an enticing hypothetical imagining of two eras merged into one.
Speculation may also continue around how Aguero himself would fare in Pep Guardiola’s current system – one now built around Erling Haaland’s physical dominance and penalty-box movement. With Haaland and Aguero both prolific but stylistically different, many fans enjoy debating whether the two could even have played together.
