Don Goodman speaks to FLW on Gus Hamer's potential exit links to Turkey with Trabzonspor
EFL and Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has given his thoughts on the likelihood of Gus Hamer's January exit, amidst times of struggle at Bramall Lane.
With just one win in all competitions so far this season, it's been far from the ideal start for Sheffield United, who look to steer somehow back on track with much-needed victories post the October international break being an understatement.
In the midst of the Blades' below-par performances on the pitch, manager Chris Wilder will certainly have one eye on the January transfer window in order to get reinforcements through the door to stop the rut the club is currently in.
However, as well as newcomers, it is likely that the downturn in form since their play-off heartbreak at the end of last season will have consequences in the way of departures. A player with the proven ability of Gus Hamer certainly falls into that catagory.
With potential links away from the club come January already being talked about for the Dutchman, according to Turkish outlet, Taka Gazete, Trabzonspor have been interested in the 28-year-old, and the transfer could well materialise if things don't get brighter for the Blades in the near future.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes that a move to Turkey for Hamer cannot be ruled out due to his own personal aspirations for his career ahead.
With a potential move to Turkey on the cards for Hamer, it spells danger for the Blades who could end up being without their star man for the second half of the season. However, with very few, if any, of the Sheffield United side living up to their full potential this campaign, despite it being a sorry sight to see the back of their key creator if he were to leave, it may be a case of cashing in while they can.
Don Goodman believes that if the current situation in South Yorkshire doesn't change for the better very soon, then a move overseas could become increasingly likely for the ex-Coventry man.
"Like many, many Sheffield United players, I don't see the same levels so far this season from Gus Hamer."
"That could be to do with a couple of things. That could be to do with losing the play-off final in the dramatic way that they did. It could be to do with the fact that he didn't get a move to a higher league.
"He is 28-years-old now, and in the prime of his career, and he will feel that he needs to be operating at the highest level that he possibly can."
Despite Hamer's potential exit being a tough pill to swallow if it were to materialse, it may be the best decision for the club at this stage for monetary reasons.
After two impressive seasons in Red and White, with 28 league goals contributions to his name over the course of that time, the best of Hamer in a Blades shirt may have already been seen. With only one assist in nine games this season, shipping on the Dutchman at this current time may be the best time in order to receive a decent fee for him.
Don Goodman believes that his exit would not only benefit Sheffield United, but for Hamer, he could rediscover his form and test himself against tougher opposition.
"He's already had a taste of the Premier League. He'll want more, and if not the Premier League, possibly another big European league."
"I can understand the links, and if Sheffield United can get a really big fee for him, then it might be something that they would entertain."
