Barcelona’s option to buy Marcus Rashford from Manchester United has not expired and the ball is in the court of the Catalans over whether to trigger it, according to journalist Rich Fay.

Rashford came through Manchester United’s academy and has scored 138 goals and provided 79 in 426 appearances for the Red Devils.

He spent the second half of the 2024/25 season on loan at Aston Villa and scored four goals and chipped in with six assists in 17 matches.

Villa were pleased with Rashford and were keen to keep him, but he headed back to Old Trafford in the summer.

The 28-year-old is currently on loan this season at Barcelona, where he has scored ten goals and provided 13 assists in 39 games so far.

The Blaugrana are currently at the top of La Liga with 73 points in 29 matches and have also reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Under Hansi Flick, Rashford is having a good campaign, with strong performances in La Liga, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey.

Rashford’s loan at Barcelona is set to expire in June 2026, but the Spanish club can make his loan move permanent if they activate a €35m option to buy, which they managed to include in the loan deal.

It had been suggested in some quarters that the option to buy has now expired, but that talk is wide of the mark and Barcelona can still trigger it.

The Red Devils are confident that this summer they will be able to secure a permanent move for Rashford even if the Blaugrana do not activate the option to buy clause.

Manchester United invested heavily this season to bring in Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha to bolster the attack at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are currently third in the Premier League table under interim manager Michael Carrick and look set to finish in the top five, which will further boost finances at the club.

Rashford has been deployed as a winger and striker under Flick at Barcelona and returned the manager’s faith with crucial goals and assists in all competitions.

The former Manchester United academy graduate is still loved at the club and by the fans, but it seems that his time with the Red Devils is coming to an end after spending more than a decade at Old Trafford.

Rashford came off the bench in England’s 1-0 friendly loss to Japan on Tuesday night and Barcelona may well want to get him signed before the World Cup
