Liverpool Set Firm Asking Price for Darwin Nunez as Napoli Stall Over Valuation

Liverpool have made their stance clear regarding the future of Darwin Nunez, with the Premier League champions holding out for a fee upwards of £60 million amid interest from Napoli.

The Uruguay international has been the subject of growing transfer speculation this summer, and though he is not considered an automatic starter under Arne Slot, Liverpool are not prepared to sanction a cut-price departure. Sources close to the club confirm that the forward is available for transfer, but only if their valuation is met.

Napoli Eye Nunez but Face Financial Hurdles

Napoli’s interest in Nunez is long-standing, but negotiations are being stalled by the Merseyside club’s financial demands. Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, explained the state of play from the Serie A champions’ perspective.

“Napoli at the moment still want Darwin Nunez, but feel that the transfer fee is too high. Liverpool want more than €65m [£55.6m], probably in excess of €70m [£59.9m] for Darwin Nunez. At the moment, Napoli believe that the numbers of this deal are excessive, too expensive,” Romano said.

“This is why at the moment there is still no green light. Napoli are still working on the deal, so let’s see what’s going to happen there with Nunez, because for sure, Napoli remain in conversations. Meanwhile, they have the other option, Lorenzo Lucca, still in their hands in case they can’t get Darwin Nunez.”

Value Judgement Driving Liverpool’s Stance

Liverpool, who signed Nunez from Benfica in 2022 for an initial £64 million, are prepared to take a modest hit on their investment. However, club sources insist they will not accept a low-ball offer simply to move the striker on.

Although Nunez has often divided opinion, his record of 40 goals across three seasons shows he has not been a total misfire. His impact in key moments and his age profile at 26 make him a valuable asset in a volatile market, particularly given the shortage of proven centre-forwards currently available.

With Slot’s tactical evolution shifting the front-line responsibilities, and with Liverpool linked to alternative targets in the final third, Nunez’s future appears increasingly uncertain. Even so, the club are taking a measured and strategic approach to any potential sale.

Plan B in Sight for Serie A Champions

Should Napoli fail to raise their offer, attention may turn to Udinese striker Lorenzo Lucca, who has been identified as an alternative. For now, the Italians remain engaged in talks, though there is an increasing sense that Nunez’s price tag may prove prohibitive.

Liverpool are under no financial pressure to sell and will only part ways with the forward on their terms. The club’s recruitment model under Fenway Sports Group has always been driven by valuation and timing, and this case is no different.

If no agreement is reached, Nunez may yet remain at Anfield for another season, even if his role is more rotational. For Napoli, the message is clear – meet the asking price or move on.
