Starting point: This is already the fourth away game in the competition for BVB, who played a 4-4 draw away in Turin, won the match in Copenhagen (4-2) and the one against Bilbao (4-1), and are now in sixth place with seven points. Although equal in points, Manchester have scored one goal less and are thus behind in goal difference. Manchester are currently in seventh place after wins against Napoli (2-0) and Villarreal (2-0), and a draw in Monaco (2-2). The two clubs will meet for the seventh time.

Borussia Mönchengladbach managed a 1-1 draw in March 1979 in their quarter-final first-leg of the UEFA Cup, as did Borussia 33 years later, in October 2012, in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. ManCity's only home defeat against a Bundesliga side came on 2 October 2013, when they lost 3-1 against Bayern Munich.

Borussia facts: BVB have won seven of their last 14 away games in the UEFA Champions League, losing only four and drawing three. Of their 18 away games in England, they won only five and lost 12 (and there was one draw). In March 2016, Borussia were the first and only German club to win at White Hart Lane, the former home of Tottenham Hotspur. This was followed, however, by seven consecutive defeats against English clubs. In October 2023, they finally managed a win again in England, 1-0 in Newcastle against Newcastle United.
